Doug Schmidt

Nothing is more satisfying than helping a company plot a growth strategy and then grab the brass ring. But while I love the strategic aspect, my greatest strength is building trust. This ability is the secret sauce that enables me to secure the best price and terms for our clients.

Doug is one of the most respected middle market investment banking professionals in the Mid-Atlantic and has actively contributed to the growth of the region’s business community for over 30 years. Known for his “politely persuasive” M&A skills and dedication to raising capital for growth companies, he’s helped to finance scores of companies in both the public and private sector, executing on hundreds of transactions in M&A, private placements and IPOs.

A sought-after speaker on the topics of financing, entrepreneurship and M&A, Doug also uses his knowledge and experience to make a difference in both the business community and society.

He currently advises several non-profits on fund and scholarship management and was a founder of the Maryland Survivors Scholarship Fund for children of 9/11 victims. Additionally, Doug is working to alleviate homelessness through his role on the board of Baltimore Continuum of Care. He is also past chair of the Greater Baltimore Technology Council and of Chimes International, and was a director/officer of the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association in its heyday.

Prior to joining Chessiecap, Doug was an investment banker with Ferris, Baker Watts and Legg Mason Wood Walker and also served as an investor with Grotech Capital Group. Doug cut his teeth on Wall Street as a young vice president in the super-charged M&A Department of Drexel Burnham Lambert.

What you may not know about Doug is the basis for his fearless approach in representing clients. In his youth, Doug rode an 850cc motorcycle the length of Africa from Cape Town to Cairo (and on to England), sailed on a tall ship around the Cape of Good Hope and traversed Borneo by land from east to west. Through these and many other adventures, Doug became expert at navigating through complex situations with acuity and determination — qualities that our clients appreciate when they are facing market resistance or difficult negotiations.

Doug earned his AB from Harvard College and his MPPM from the Yale School of Management.
